Honeywell's SMART Position Sensor is the most accurate and durable linear position device available in the industry (0,05 mm [0.002 in]), enabling highly accurate motion control, and improving operation efficiency and safety. Its simple, non-contact design eliminates mechanical failure mechanisms, reducing wear and tear, improving reliability and durability, and minimizing downtime.
"SMART" stands for Superior Measurement, Accuracy, Reliability, and Thinking. This device uses a patented combination of an ASIC and an array of magnetoresistive (MR) sensors to determine the position of a magnet attached to a moving object, allowing it to essentially think for itself.
Sealed packaging allows robustness in most harsh environments such as shock, vibration, extreme temperatures, salt water, and dusty or rough terrain. Installation is simplified to four simple steps versus up to 14 steps for some competitive products, reducing set-up costs.
The SMART Position Sensor replaces multiple sensor and switch components that competitive products often require, eliminating extra wiring, connections, and external components, therefore reducing design, installation, and supply chain complexity. Its built-in redundancy and self-diagnostics provide additional safety benefits and reduce equipment downtime. The new SMART Position Sensor provides value to our customers by:
- Light weight: More than 50% lighter in weight than LVDT (Linear Variable Differential Transformer) technology
- Accurate: Capable of accurately measuring values down to 0,05 mm [0.002 in]; resolution of up to 16 bits
- Robust: As there are no moving parts within the sensing element, Honeywell can seal the sensor, making it more resistant to vibration, shock, and extreme temperatures
- Adaptable: Electronics on-board make it easily adaptable to most commercial platforms, often eliminating extra external electronics
- Reduces total cost of ownership: Built-in temperature compensated output can eliminate customers having to expend engineering resources to build their own output algorithms
- Reliable and durable: Non-contact design reduces wear and tear, improving reliability and durability, and minimizing downtime
- Simplifies design-in: Easy-to-configure sensor array fits virtually any linear movement path, simplifying design-in
- Easy to install: Installation takes four simple steps (1: position device; 2: drill holes; 3: mount sensor; 4: locate magnet/connect three wires) vs. up to 14 steps some competitive products require, simplifying installation and reducing set-up costs
- Cost effective: Because the product consists of multiple sensors built into one array, one device typically replaces multiple sensor and switch components that competitive solutions often require, eliminating extra wiring, connections, and external components
- Flexible: Air gap of up to 3,0 ± 2,5 mm [0.118 ± 0.098 in] between sensor and magnet expands application opportunities; several output options (analog standard; CAN bus and RS232 interface available upon request)
- Safe: Built-in redundancy provides additional safety benefits
POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS
Aerospace
- Aircraft ram door: may be used to control air dispersed from the engine to help heat cabin, and to control airflow to help boost aircraft speed Medical
Medical
- Syringe pumps: may be used to accurately monitor position of plunger on syringe to monitor amount and rate of medication delivered to patient
Industrial
- Cutting and slitting machinery: may be used in paper mills to accurately control location of slitter before it cuts
- Elevators: may be used to accurately determine elevator position so it's even with floor when doors open, enhancing safety
- Material handling: may be used on a lifting device that moves cartons from one conveyor belt to another
- Packaging: may be used on a syringe in glue dispenser to monitor glue dispensed; maximizes usage and informs operator when new tube required
- Plastic molding machines: may be used to monitor injection position
- Valve position: may be used to monitor valve position so desired amount of liquid is delivered based on position of valve that is opening and closing, and how long it is open and closed (e.g., bottling machines, food processing, chemical processing, water handling equipment, etc.)
- Wafer handling equipment: may be used to determine if the parts are properly placed
- Woodworking machinery: may be used to monitor depth of the tool
